Iowa coaches focus on the future
WATERLOO Best dressed and the recruiting circuit were hot topics at the Black Hawk County I Club spring banquet Monday night at Sunnyside Country Club.
Emcee Mac McCausland was ribbed for his choice of attire while universal compliments went toward Iowa basketball assistant coach Andrew Francis. Introduced as "Mr. New York," Francis took it in stride, but was more proud of what he’s been able to put together on the recruiting trail in his fifth season after coming to Iowa with head coach Fran McCaffery. It’s all part of the bigger plan for the future of Hawkeye basketball.
"We want to be able to recruit nationally, just like we want to be able to compete nationally. That’s our goal," Francis said. "Some people may think we’re just talking the talk because that’s what they’re supposed to say. There’s a true belief in that. A very honest, true belief in that and we’re doing this to win titles."
The coach revealed more of his strategy to get the right players in an Iowa uniform and talked at length about the kind of character he looks for in young men to continue building the Iowa program that went to the NCAA nfl jerseys china Tournament for the first time in eight years this spring. He was sure to add that the ability to put a ball in a basket was important, too.
"Although we may get guys who don’t have five stars in front of their names. They don’t have four stars," Francis added. "Can they put the ball in the hole? Will they go to class? Will they be a quality guy in the community?
"It’s equally as important as how many stars they have."
Women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder had the same enthusiasm for the recruiting class she has coming into her 16th season and working on a Big Ten best seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Whitney Jennings was Miss Indiana Basketball this past winter while Chase Coley was Miss Minnesota Basketball and her NFL Jerseys Outlet mother, a former University of Minnesota player, couldn’t say no to Iowa.
Adding to the class is Carly Mohns out of Wisconsin, and Bluder relayed the story of Mohns being named her school’s homecoming queen and shooting her first goose all within a 24 hour period.
The newcomers will be added to an experienced roster that exceeded expectations a year ago, but will now have to try to live up to high hopes led by All American hopeful Samantha Logic.
"Anytime you end the season ranked 19th in the country and return four starters to your lineup, you feel pretty good about what you have in store," said Bluder, who is now Iowa’s all time winningest coach.
"That’s exciting, but it’s also a little bit of pressure. Our team is excited about living up to those expectations."
Football coach Kirk Ferentz wrapped up the evening by deflecting his moniker as the dean of Big Ten coaches with a reminder of what that title meant in the movie "Animal House."
Ferentz touched on the NFL draft and the dream come true moment it has become for so many of his players, the Ladies Football Academy that has been spearheaded by his wife, Mary, the passing of former defensive coordinator and all around good guy Norm Parker this past January, the six newcomers to the staff for the upcoming season and the kinds of contributions he expects from former Cedar Falls standout Barkley Hill at running back and former Union all stater Jay Scheel, who will join the team this summer.
And most importantly, Ferentz noted cheap nfl jerseys how much more enjoyable it is to make the I Club rounds after getting his team back to a bowl game last season.
"When I was on the banquet circuit a year ago, I was pretty much telling everyone it was a disappointing year. We just did not www.illinipra.com play well enough or competitive enough two seasons ago to expect to win in our sport," Ferentz said. "We encouraged our guys to go back to work and try to do everything a little bit better. That started with me and for everybody in the organization."
Wrestling assistant coach Luke Eustice knew the crowd at NFL Jerseys Wholesale Sunnyside, immediately brought up Dan Gable and explained the impact he still has on the Iowa program. And his point, essentially, was that the Hawkeyes’ finish in the national tournament the past few years is not up to Gable’s standards.
"Disappointment comes to mind. Not that we haven’t had some good performances, but from a team standpoint, what we’re trying to do is win. Win in every way," Eustice said.
The former Hawkeye wrestler in his eighth year on the staff also spent time discussing Cedar Falls native Mike Kelly, Denver’s Brandon Sorensen and Union’s Logan Thomsen.
Bond Shymansky has yet to coach a match as head coach of the Iowa volleyball team, but getting to know the area won’t be a hurdle for him to overcome. The Iowa City native has two degrees from Iowa and immediately talked up the talent in the state of Iowa, especially around the Cedar Valley.
